The most famous cryptocurrency is Bitcoin.
It was created in 2009, right after the financial crisis, as a response to a broken system, to give people an independent and fair alternative.
Bitcoin is limited to 21 million coins, which protects it from inflation — unlike the euro or the dollar that can be printed endlessly.
But Bitcoin is just the beginning.
There are thousands of other cryptocurrencies, often called altcoins, each with unique purposes,from smart contracts to decentralized finance (DeFi).
